In Astronomy we study objects and events in space such as planets, black holes, galaxies, eclipses, solar storms and gamma ray bursts. We learn how star systems form and how stars themselves are born, evolve and eventually die. Astronomy also explores the origins and structure of the universe. Professional astronomers search for new planets and investigate the possibility of life beyond the Earth. Astronomy uses tools and techniques from other fields most notably mathematics, physics and chemistry. Research in astronomy has led to important technological advances. Thus in 1868 study of the spectrum of the sun led to the discovery of Helium which is widely used today in MRI machines and welding. Even without such practical benefits study of astronomy would still be worthwhile as it expands our understanding of the universe and is deeply interesting in its own right.
